The South Hams is a district in South Devon that is bordered by Dartmoor, Plymouth and Torbay, many people actually think that Torbay is part of the South Hams but this isn’t the case. Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Totnes are all in the South Hams district. Perhaps the most infamous part of the history of the South Hams relates to the village of Hallsands which is now just two houses having been washed away by storms in 1917. The village stood at the edge of the beach and was protected by a sea wall and was a thriving village with a local Inn up until the turn of the 20th century. Permission was granted to dredge for construction materials just off Hallsands for a new dock in Plymouth, despite protestations from the inhabitants. As they suspected, the dredging destabilised the beach and the village defences started to crumble. The end came on January 26th 1917 when the defences were breached and the village was damaged beyond repair.
Tourism remains the key industry in the area which has caused some issues with the local villagers being unable to buy properties at affordable levels. The scenery in the area, specifically along the River Dart in the upper reaches and the tidal lower reaches as well as the River Plym. There are many small villages and inlets, specifically on the River Dart with local Inns that are well worth the visit with breath taking scenery and lots of activities including walking and pony trecking available.
