Car Hire in Teignmouth and Car Rental in Teignmouth

Car hire and Rentals from Chief Rentals, the leading South Devon Car Hire company

Teignmouth is a beautiful seaside town to the east of Torbay and Torquay but within easy driving distance and close to nearby Newton Abbot with its own railway station on the mainline railway that links the South West with the rest of the UK. Tourism is now the major source of income for the town as with many South Devon towns. Along with the traditional pier and beautiful sandy beach, Teignmouth has another geographical feature that is just stunning on a hot summers evening. You can walk along the beautiful beach right around a small sandy bar or spit and back along the front of houses overlooking the harbour and the inside of the Teign estuary. This area lends itself to art with many fantastic paintings of the River Teign, the beaches, Shaldon and the unique setting of many beachfront houses having been painted.

Teignmouth still operates aa an active port handling clay and grain with many large ships being guided into the port at high tide. This is a spectacular sight when viewed from the end of the beach as large grain ships pass within feet or the edge of the beach. The natural harbour area also hosts a number of smaller pleasure vessels and yachts with several notable moorings further inland that again provide fantastic scenes for local artists and pgotographers. There is also an abundance of wildlife along the tidal estuary with shore fishing one of the more popular local past times.

You really can’t visit Teignmouth without noticing the Shaldon bridge which connects Teignmouth with the South Hams and the village of Shaldon. The bridge was originally constructed of wood in 1827 and had 34 wooden arches. The unique feature was really the use of wood in the construction given that this is a tidal river. As would be expected, the original bridge suffered the ravages of the local climate and shipworm and the original bridge lasted only eleven years. It remains today, still with a toll house at one end but is now constructed from traditional steel and concrete. The bridge still whistles in strong winds when the winds come from a specific direction and the cause for the whistling is not known!
