5 Things to Do Before Returning Your Rental Car

Vehicle rentals are a good way to get around when you don’t have a car of your own, due to location or repairs. Whatever your reason for hiring a car, you should remember to do a few things before you take the vehicle back to the rental company.

1. Fill Up with Petrol

It’s best to do this before you return the vehicle. In general, you’ll get the car with a full tank of petrol and you should return it in the same condition. Look for a petrol station near the rental business so you can fill it up just before dropping it off again. If you don’t, you could end up with extra charges.

2. Clear Out Your Rubbish

The rental company will clean the car anyway, but it’s polite to remove the rubbish. Any food wrappers and packaging from toys or new items should be thrown away. If you’ve taken the vehicle anywhere that caused excess sand, mud, or dirt to get on the upholstery, it may be wise to clean this before you return the vehicle. After all, there is usually a cleaning fee for anything out of the ordinary that must be cleaned, or that requires more than the usual methods.

3. Remove Your Belongings

Don’t forget anything in the vehicle. This happens frequently because small items are left in seat pockets, door compartments or the glovebox. Be sure to check under the seats and in the trunk, as well, so you don’t miss anything.

4. Take Photos of the Car

Before you return the vehicle, but have parked it, you should take photos of the mileage and the exterior and interior of the vehicle. This simply protects you against possible issues in the future if there are arguments as to what condition the vehicle was in. You should also keep hold of any documents you received from the rental company.

5. Do a Final Check

In most cases, you will have a representative or agent at the office who can check the vehicle. They will look at it all and sign the paperwork to ensure you are clear. The security deposit will be unlocked or refunded, depending on the situation. Keep in mind that refunds can take time to go through, so it will likely not be immediate.

Rental vehicles can be immensely useful. If you’re on holiday in a new location, or if your own vehicle is not currently functional, a rental may be the best option for getting around. Contact Chief Rentals to learn more about our rental options.
