5 Things to Do Before You Return Your Hired Car

Hiring a car is a wonderful way to enjoy the area you’re in without having to bring your own vehicle. It allows you to drive to destinations you may not have looked into if you were on foot or relying on public transportation. If you’re travelling with children, it’s even more essential to have your own vehicle to get around in.

When the trip is over and you’re ready to return the vehicle, there are a few things you should do first.

1. Wash the Car

Whether you’ve driven for miles through a dusty trail or just gone around the city once, the car will have some dust and grime on it. You’ll find that quickly washing the vehicle is a good idea, since you can return it in pristine condition. This also makes it easier to see that there’s no damage to the vehicle.

2. Clean the Interior

The inside of the car also needs to be cleaned out. Discard any rubbish that has been collected (don’t forget to check seat back pockets and cup holders). Sweep sand or dirt out of the vehicle with a small brush or broom. If possible, you should vacuum the vehicle and shake out any mats before replacing them. Give the interior a quick wipe down to ensure there are no stains or any stubborn grime. This will help you prevent any extra charges.

You should also set the seats back to their positions and return cupholders, trays, etc. to their proper position for driving.

3. Fill It Up

Just before you return the vehicle, stop at a petrol station and fill the tank. If you don’t do this, you’ll be charged a premium for the agency to fill the tank. It’s far cheaper to just do it yourself and avoid any surprise bills.

4. Do a Thorough Inspection

Drop the vehicle off and do a walk around. You can take photos of the vehicle from all angles, inside and out. If you receive reports of damage later, you can prove there was none when you returned the vehicle, with the images.

5. Collect All Your Belongings

Finally, be sure to remove all your own personal belongings from the vehicle. Check the boot, the various compartments, etc. to ensure you have everything before you leave. This will help avoid any missing items that may or may not be found by the personnel in the agency.

By following these steps, you should have a nice, relaxing vehicle return. There will be no surprises if you return the vehicle in the same condition it was received in, so take care to clean it up a bit and fill the tank with petrol before coming back.
