Wondering if you’re able to rent a car? While the simplest way to find out is to call the rental company and ask, there are a few rules across the board. You should know whether or not you are qualified for a car rental before you book.
Why Rent a Car?
People rent cars for many different reasons. In some cases, it is because you’re travelling, for work or pleasure. You may need a vehicle to get around in, but if you’ve flown to the area, you have no car to drive.
Another reason to rent is when your own vehicle is being serviced. If you have several days to wait before your car is ready to drive again, you can rent a car to use during that time. Or, you may simply have more friends or family members arriving that you need to transport to a landmark for sightseeing. Renting a van for this occasion is perfect.
Who Can Rent a Car in the UK?
Not everyone is permitted to rent a vehicle in the UK. If you are 25 and up, you will be able to rent. However, newer drivers will not be permitted to rent a car. Even at 25, you can’t drive just any rental vehicle. In fact, you need to be over 30 before you can rent exotic cars, full sized MPVs or commercial lorries.
Of course, you’ll need a valid driver’s licence in order to rent the vehicle. This must be valid and up to date. If you are a visitor to the country, you’ll also need your own passport and a proof of return travel before you can rent the car.
Finally, you have to have a debit or credit card. This I show you’ll pay for the vehicle during the rental period.
Must You Buy Insurance?
Insurance is included in the cost of most car rentals, so be sure to discuss this with the rental company. However, keep in mind that this insurance is usually basic and you may choose to add extra protection if needed.
Every rental company will have their own policies, you should read everything and be sure you understand what your duties are and how you will be protected if anything happens.
